1. Parts of speech: English sentences are made up of words. Each word, in turn, is a part of speech. Here’s a quick review of the main parts of speech

2.Word order in English


Verb + Subject+Complement
Adjective & Nouns
The most common order of words in sentences is as follows: Subject + Verb + Complement
Examples:
·       Sally speaks English.
·       John reads the newspaper.
·       Anita lives in Taiwan
·       Jorge likes spicy food
·       Most of Colombians like football
·       Sara and Tony work in University
·       Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa
·       Barack Obama is the president of the United States of America
·       Shakira has eight half-siblings
·       Fernando Botero does not live in Colombia
An adjective is a word that describes something (a noun) or someone (a person).
Adjectives sometimes appear after the verb To Be
  • He is short.
  • She is tall.
Adjectives sometimes appear before a noun.
  • Red car
  • Old hat

5. Presente simple (Simple present).
El Presente Simple es un tiempo verbal que se utiliza para:
a.  Describir acciones habituales que suceden con cierta frecuencia (Un habito, una actividad programada)
  • The English class is on wednesdays at 5pm.
  • At Universidad Nacional, many students practice sports
  • In Medellin, the Metro operates from 4:30am to 11pm
  • In Colombia, many soccer fans watch matches on sunday
  • Colombians do not drink much whiskey, most of them prefer beer and aguardiente.
b. Para describir hechos o generalizaciones
  • Planets spin around a star
  • Colombia exports coffee
  • Mexican food is spicy
  • Colombia has significant natural resources
  • Bolivia does not have beaches
c. Para describir apariencia fisica o personalidad
  • Elephants have long trunks
  • Chinese people have slanted eyes
  • In Colombia, primary and high school students wear uniforms. In public schools of USA, students have a dress code instead of  uniforms.
  • Cats and dogs are usually friendly animals
  • The weather in Colombia is nice.
